The name citrine is derived from the old French word for lemon, citrin. Although the most sought-after stones have a clear, radiant yellowish to brownish red color, they can also be transparent to translucent and yellow to gold-brown in color with a vitreous luster. The darker colored Citrine crystals, named Madeira for their color’s resemblance to Madeira wines, are generally more valuable. Citrine is not a commonly occurring crystal, and most natural citrine occurs when Amethyst formations are near natural heat sources in the Earth’s crust. Most of the world’s supply of Citrine comes from Brazil. Other sources include, France, Madagascar and Russia. Historically, it has been found in Spain, on the Scottish island of Arran, in Hungary and in several mines overseas. Deposits in the United states are in North Carolina, Colorado and California. Citrine becomes dark brown when exposed to x-rays and white when heated. Citrine is an Earth stone, and these yellow stones seem to have a mellow, warm tone and feel as if they have captured the last glow of autumn. Like golden Rhine wine or sparkling Madeira, heavy and sweet, citrine jewelery shimmers and brings a hint of sunshine to dull and gloomy days.

There are few references in history to Citrine, perhaps because of the stone’s rarity. The first occurrences seem to be the use of Citrine by Romans for intaglio and cabochon in the first centuries after the birth of Christ. The Naphtali tribe of Israel is associated with Citrine, and during the Romantic Period of history (1837-1860), Citrine saw increased use as a gemstone in jewelry. In ancient times, citrine was worn as protection against snake venom and evil thoughts.

According to healers, Citrine’s power is primarily located in the third Chakra the area slightly down from the navel and associated with the formation of the personality, feeling, being and the combining of spiritual and earthly aspects of a person. They consider Citrine’s energy as helpful in clearing and protecting the spirit and mind and bringing about mental healing. The stone is believed to dissipate, transform and transmute negative energy. Citrine’s golden yellow is the same as this Chakra’s color, and in this area, Citrine is supposed to unblock the flow of energy. A blocked third Chakra can result in a greedy, manipulative and abusive person. When the energy of this area is unrestricted in its flow, they say it brings a balance to those negative characteristics and can make a person more confident, caring and more in touch with the higher self. Spiritualists credit Citrine with the power to open up channels into the inner self and the soul. It brings knowledge of the ego, the soul and can result in a more grounded presence in life. They recommend the stone to men and women who seem to have lost their own will in relationships, business and life. Further, the stone will communicate survival instincts from the soul to the ego.

As mentioned above, healers consider Citrine a self-esteem stone with powers to heal the mind’s feelings of inadequacy and deem it essential for handling negative criticism. It is also good, according to believers, as an energizing stone against power issues of willpower, optimism, confidence and self-discipline. Secondary mental healing traits include its ability to awaken the mind, create clarity and increase knowledge of the self, as well as general relaxation and emotional healing powers and protections against overwhelming fear, depression, money worries and security. Further, because of Citrine’s ability to increase knowledge of the self, New Age healers recommend it in times of introspection, when making choices or when creative solutions are necessary.

Citrine is essential for maintaining the health of the digestive, circulatory and urinary system. It is believed to eliminate toxins in the second and third chakras and has the power to assist in ailments where toxins can cause discomfort or disease, such as acid indigestion, poor blood circulation, food disorders and allergies. Good for kidneys, colon, liver, gallbladder, digestive organs, heart, and promotes tissue regeneration. It is said that it detoxifies physical / emotional / mental bodies, and enhances the body’s own inherent healing energy. In addition, it diminishes self-destructive tendencies, and raises self-esteem. It can assist in achieving a powerful alignment with one’s higher self. Lightheartedness, cheerfulness, hope are all brought to one by citrine and it exudes a warming and energizing aura.

According to healers, Citrine’s use as a stone of self-esteem relates to its power as an instrument for protection. When self-esteem is low, it is often a result of someone else’s abuse of mental or psychic power and because it is believed to dissipate negative energy, Citrine is thought to be effective. It is believed Citrine can be used to bolster personal power and protect against this type of abuse. It should be worn at night to remove fear, prevent nightmares and ensure a good nights sleep. It also increases motivation and promotes physical activity. Good for those involved in education or business, and it helps guide and harness creative energy. Citrine aids in developing inner calm and security and makes one less sensitive and more open to constructive criticism.

Some have said that Citrine is excellent for ensuring the accumulation of wealth. This is a good stone to use in spells asking for prosperity, not only will citrine attract money and success; it will help you keep it. Put a citrine in the back left corner in every room in your home to insure abundance. The back left corner is the corner viewed from the doorway as you enter any room. It is said to attract abundance, and is a stone of protection, psychic awareness and creativity. It is said to dispel sadness, anger and nocturnal fears, to warn its wearer of poisons and protect him or her from sudden death. It is reputed to make men handsome and intelligent and sterile women fertile and happy. However, it is probably better not to rely too much on its magical powers, since it was also claimed that you could immerse your hand in boiling water after a topaz had been thrown into it and retract it again unharmed!
